Fees and Payment Options

Session Fees

If you are considering receiving therapy from Heart and Mind Counseling, please call to schedule a free 20-minute telephone consultation to discuss your issue(s) and how you may benefit from counseling. Payment is expected at the time services are rendered and is addressed at the beginning of each session, in order to facilitate maximum focus on therapy for the remainder of the appointment time. Heart and Mind Counseling accepts cash, checks, or credit cards.

“Out of Network” Insurance Benefits

Rick Carlson is an “Out-of-Network” provider for most major insurance companies. Clients using this insurance benefit pay for therapy at the time of service prior to the session, and then submit costs to their insurance company for partial reimbursement, depending on coverage limitations.

  • While “Out-of-Network” services generally do not require insurance company treatment plans, coordination of care, and case management, submitting therapy expenses to insurance does require a “diagnosis” of a current mental health disorder. This will be discussed with you before being listed on your detailed receipt.

While most insurance plans include “Out-of-Network” mental health benefits, some do not. Please verify your current benefits before planning to use this form of insurance for counseling.

Health Savings or Medical Flex Savings Account (HSA/FSA)

Some clients submit their receipts for reimbursement to their employer sponsored Health Savings or Flex Savings Account, in effect paying for their therapy with pre-tax dollars.

Self Pay

Many counseling clients choose to pay for their counseling personally, regardless of insurance coverage.

Private paying clients may decide not to involve insurance companies in their mental health care, period. They consciously choose a therapist they know to be professional, compassionate and effective, and one who shares their own personal or spiritual values. Their therapy is not limited by diagnoses, treatment plans, or session limitations that a health policy may dictate.

Additionally, self pay clients are assured of the highest degree of privacy, flexibility, and control of their mental health record allowed by Minnesota state law, since records are exempt from insurance reporting and random compliance audits.

To help making paying for therapy easier, some clients are seen on a negotiated fee, according to demonstrated need.
